Why recognise IELTS?
You can trust IELTS to provide reliable, high quality English language assessments in a secure environment
IELTS has been developed by world-leading language assessment specialists in close consultation with academics, professional bodies and immigration authorities around the world for over 20 years.
It tests all four key English language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
The test content is internationally focused and the Listening test uses a range of accents: North American, Australian, New Zealand and British.
IELTS uses face-to-face interview techniques with a certified examiner, giving an accurate assessment of a candidate’s ability to speak English. It is the only major English language test to provide a real-life, interactive speaking test.
IELTS scores are reliable and secure, so you can be certain that a candidate’s results reflect their true ability.
IELTS is internationally recognised, and successful IELTS candidates use our global search facility to find businesses and institutions that accept their scores. See Who accepts IELTS? for details.
Recognise IELTS and your organisation will join the online database searched by over 1.7 million people each year.
Easy to administer
IELTS is easy to administer and offers
- a free online results verification service, so you can check a candidate’s results quickly and securely
- a free online bulk download facility, so that you can streamline your application processing systems and transfer results directly to your data systems
Two types of test
There are two versions of the IELTS test:
- IELTS Academic
- IELTS General Training
This means that you can identify applicants who have taken a test that is directly relevant to your English-language purposes. Both tests measure English language ability to the same high levels.
IELTS Academic is generally required by universities in English-speaking countries. It is also the test favoured by professional bodies for registration purposes.
IELTS General Training
IELTS General Training focuses on an individual’s language skills in broad social and workplace contexts. It is typically used by those who are going to English-speaking countries to undertake secondary education, work experience or training programs.
Recognise IELTS and you will be able to decide which test is most suitable for the needs of your organisation.
Scores you can trust
IELTS is jointly managed by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.
Examiners are fully qualified English language specialists certified by Cambridge ESOL, and results are benchmarked worldwide.
You can be confident that the scores that you see will accurately reflect a candidate’s ability.
Selecting applicants with the right level of English has never been easier.
