English Language Tests for London Private Hire Drivers
Before getting your licence as a London private hire driver, you’ll need to show that you can communicate clearly in English with passengers. Transport for London (TfL) has approved IELTS test scores as the accepted standard of English language for its drivers.
TfL requires that all new private hire drivers and drivers wanting to renew their licence can communicate effectively with passengers in English.
IELTS is approved by TfL to produce the standard of English its drivers need when communicating with the public or for understanding the regulatory requirements of the job.
You’ll need to achieve a band score of 4 in either the IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training tests for a new licence or when renewing your old one.
