For over 120 years, Oldham College has been meeting the changing needs of students and industry. The College started in 1893 when a donation from the Platt family, famous textile machinery manufacturers, led to the establishment of the school of art and science in the town. This building on Union Street still survives to this day.In the post war years the rapid growth of the local textile and engineering industries led to development of the Oldham Technical College site on Rochdale Road, which opened in 1954.In 1987 the College dropped the word “Technical” from its name and rebranded as “The Oldham College”, reflecting a move away from supporting traditional industries to a broader curriculum.
