How long will it take to get my IELTS result?
No matter how you choose to take your test, you’ll never wait more than two weeks to receive your British Council IELTS result.

How can I get IELTS results faster?
Now you can receive your IELTS results faster than ever. By taking your IELTS test on computer, you are likely to get your result within 2 days.
Please note that not all IELTS test formats are as fast: your IELTS result time depends on the type of test you take (see table above).
There are also some exceptions. While most IELTS on Computer tests results are available within 1-2 days, occasionally a test will need additional time to review to make sure your score is correct and your ID details are correct.
Can I check my IELTS result online?
It’s easy to check your IELTS results online on the Test Taker Portal. When your results are ready, we’ll send you an email notification with a link to view your scores. Some test centres also provide an SMS preview alert directly to your phone.
Please note: we cannot disclose your IELTS results via email or over the phone. You will need to use the link to see your scores online.
Your results will also be available to view online after they are released. These do not provide an official confirmation of your performance, however – for that, you’ll need your IELTS Test Report Form.
What is the IELTS Test Report Form, and when will I receive it?
The IELTS Test Report Form (or TRF) is the official confirmation of your test result that can be shared as proof of your English language proficiency. This can either be a paper copy or an electronic version (eTRF).
Paper Test Report Forms
If you have taken IELTS on paper, your results would be available 13 days after your test date and in 1-2 days if you have taken IELTS on a computer. The paper copy of the TRF can be collected in person at the test centre or delivered by post; please check with your test centre what option is available locally. Please allow at least seven working days for the postal delivery of the TRF.
Electronic Test Report Forms
If you have taken IELTS Online or IELTS on computer, you will receive your results electronically only. You can download the electronic version (eTRF) from the Test Taker portal 1-8 days after your test. We will not issue an additional paper Test Report Forms.
You can print your electronic Test Report Form (eTRF) to send it to the organisations you are applying to, or you can send it via email. Alternatively, you can send your results direct to the organization through the Test Taker portal. If you lose your Test Report Form at any stage, or have questions about your results, please contact us.
How can I get copies of my Test Report Form?
Most institutions you’re applying to will need original copies of your IELTS Test Report Form, meaning photocopies will not be accepted. However, if you have taken IELTS Online, you can print out your eTRF or send it via email.
We can send up to five additional copies of your Test Report Form directly to the institutions you are applying to (e.g. universities, companies, immigration offices, etc). If you would like us to do this, please include the relevant addresses on the Test Taker Portal within two years of taking the test.
While paper versions remain the norm, some universities and institutions have now subscribed to the electronic download of IELTS scores. Please check with your local test centre before sending a hard copy of your results or asking us to do so.
How should I read my IELTS scores?
You will be awarded an IELTS band score for each test section of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
Each will be graded from 0 - 9 to reflect your proficiency in English in each of these areas. These may be whole band scores (e.g. 5.0, 6.0, 7.0) or half band scores (e.g. 5.5, 6.5, 7.5).
Your IELTS Test Report Form will also show an overall band score, which is a summary of your proficiency in English factoring in all four test areas.
Can I have sections of the test re-marked?
If you wish to make an enquiry about your test results, or have any section of the test re-marked, you can submit an Enquiry on Results (EOR) request up to six weeks after your test date.
You can do this online through the Test Taker Portal or at the centre where you sat your test. There is a charge for having a section re-marked, but this will be refunded if your score increases for any section of the test.
The outcome of Enquiry on Result (EOR) can become available on the same day as your application and up to 21 days after your application. The time it takes depends on several factors, including the number of sections you’ve asked us to re-mark.
If you have not received a response after 21 days, please contact your test centre. If you took your original test via IELTS Online, please contact us.
Can I retake one section of the test to improve my score?
IELTS One Skill Retake allows you get your desired test score without retaking the full test. If you want to improve your score on one test skill, you can retake any of the four IELTS skills – Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking within 60 days of your original test date. IELTS One Skill Retake is currently only available for IELTS on Computer bookings.
